Today’s walk — North of 9th, west of Alpine, south of Mountain View, east of Lashley

I didn’t have a lot of time today, so I went for a quick and easy one… just an eight minute walk from home, and LOTS of non-street area.  So even though I covered an area roughly one-quarter mile by one-half mile, I only walked about half a mile of actual streets.  Weath

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

er was beautiful… about 55 degrees and sunny.  By the end of the walk, I had my sweater off and was in short shirt sleeves.

Centennial Park is one of the largest parks in Longmont.  I assume it got it’s name because it was developed around 1976, when Colorado was 100 years old.  And since Colorado’s the Centennial State, it’s when the United States was 200 years old.  So it could be called Bicentennial Park too, I suppose.  There were quite a few people out enjoying  it today.  I saw about ten people playing Frisbee golf, which my son is going to take me out to  play sometime soon.

I remember getting a Frisbee about the mid 1960’s, and was impressed by how far I could throw one.  But a ‘golfer’ I saw out there today put me to shame,  throwing one at least twice as far (and probably three times more accurately)!   In my defense, his Frisbee was probably a more specialized, high-tech model.  I believe Wham-O made the Frisbee, as well as, about the same time, the pitch-black Super Ball, which seemed to me to be a technological marvel!

As I said, there’s a lot of space I didn’t need to walk today.   Loma Linda Elementary, and Heritage Middle School (which are being majorly upgraded), as well as Centennial Pool, make up the north edge of the area.  There’s a fire station (not sure that it’s still being used?), a Youth Center, and the YMCA.  And the park itself has several baseball fields, a track/football/futbol field, tennis courts, and playground area.  The Oligarchy ditch also cuts through the area.
