October 26 — The Elms, Meadow Vale Farms

North of Hwy 119, west of County road 5 1/2, south of Rd. 26,, east of (? I guess this is the best way to describe it) County Road 5

Total for today :   20,560 steps and  3:43 time.

This is one of 3 or 4 areas I’m walking this year that aren’t actually within the Longmont city limits, but that kind of fit in with what I’m doing.  Originally I was going to throw them in with the ‘East Longmont’ category, but instead I’ll add a new ‘East of Longmont’ category.  I plan on walking the subdivision half a mile west of here, the business area south of highway 119, and also Del Camino west of I-25.

A shout-out to my son Nick, who turns 25 years old (a quarter of a century) today!  He was born in Longmont on October 26, 1988.

This area is divided into two approximately neighborhoods of approximately equal size.  Northern part is ‘The Elms’.  Southern half is ‘Meadow Vale Farm’.   First of all, immediately east of here is an area where the September flooding took place… where St. Vrain creek and Boulder creek meet, right near highway 119.    A few areas here had some flooding, and other areas were isolated for a while.  In particular, Edgewater Ct. probably had a few worrisome moments while watching the waters immediately to the east.

I wondered about the street name  JCK, in this sub-division… the only non-numeric street name with no vowels (even Y!) that I know.  A resident, Cynthia P., directed me to the fact that an Oliver was instrumental in developing this sub-division.  So I called a Floyd Oliver in the phone book that had an address in the area, and he confirmed that he was indeed involved in the development of this area.  He had some interesting information about the street names in the area.

I may not have all the following information right, but basically it sounded like the grandfather of the wife of Mr. Oliver was Elmer Linn Montomery… and maybe Pearl Howlett was a grandmother.  So that explains the names of two of the main thoroughfares in the area.  And it seems that Floyd’s wife was instrumental in naming most of the streets in the area… she named them after  historic Colorado country schools.

If this area is ever annexed into Longmont, there may need to be a street name change, since there would be two Montgomery Circles, both in east/northeast Longmont, just a few miles apart.

I anticipated finding out ab0ut the name JCK Court.    I still don’t know if it’s pronounced Jack, Jick, or whatever.  But Floyd told me it was a name derived from the names of three siblings… Jim, Carolyn, and Katherine.  He said Jim was a veteran lost in the Viet Nam war… and I asked him if that was Jim Hamm, and he said that was indeed the case.   I  believe he said that Jim was the youngest of the three, and he always disliked being relegated to third place, so he was placed first in this street name…
